Health & Safety Risk assessment

Comprehensive Communal area Health and Safety Assessment by Green Arrow Fire & Safety Services

Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of individuals in communal spaces is paramount, and Green Arrow Fire & Safety Services recently demonstrated our commitment to excellence by conducting a comprehensive Health and Safety assessment of a multi-floor communal area. Spanning five floors and including a plant room, highlighting a number of areas for improvement for the owners and their clients.

This meticulous approach our team takes to safeguard your spaces.

This particular assessment covered multiple key aspects of safety within the communal area. Our experts evaluated fire safety systems, emergency exits, lighting, Places of safety and ventilation to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. We also conducted risk assessments for shared amenities, stairwells, and corridors to identify potential hazards that could compromise the safety of occupants.

At Green Arrow Fire & Safety Services, we don’t just identify issues—we provide actionable recommendations. Following the assessment, we delivered a detailed report highlighting areas for improvement along with practical solutions tailored to the unique needs of the property.

At Green Arrow Fire & Safety Services, we pride ourselves on providing bespoke solutions to ensure our clients' safety and compliance. Recently, we worked with a local business in Ossett, West Yorkshire, whose Fire Risk Assessment flagged a potential fire hazard related to their mailbox

During the Fire Risk Assessment, it was noted that the mailbox posed a fire risk with it being made from wood but being externally open to the inside of the building.

Mailboxes can often be overlooked as potential fire hazards, but they can contribute to the spread of fire if not properly addressed. Recognizing the seriousness of this issue, the business contacted us to assess the situation and recommend a solution.

Our Bespoke Solution
After a thorough site visit and consultation with the owners we found the solution to minimise the risk for them, we recommended the application of fire retardant paint as the most effective solution for this particular risk. Fire retardant paint is an innovative and widely recognized method for reducing the spread of fire. It works by chemically reacting to heat, forming a protective layer that slows the spread of flames.
Our approach was guided by UK legislation, specifically the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which outlines the responsibilities of business owners to mitigate fire risks and protect occupants. The use of fire retardant products, such as intumescent or fire-resistant paints, is a recognized measure to achieve compliance with these regulations.

Implementation and Outcome
Our team applied the fire retardant paint in a precise and professional manner, ensuring that the mailbox was treated without compromising its functionality or appearance. The product used adhered to stringent safety standards and was tested to meet the requirements of BS EN 13501-1, the European classification for fire performance.
The result? A safer environment for the business and peace of mind for the owners, knowing they are fully compliant with fire safety legislation. This tailored approach not only addressed the immediate risk but also provided a long-term solution, demonstrating the importance of proactive fire safety measures.

Castleford mend-a-hose Stadium

At Green Arrow Fire & Safety Services, we believe that continuous learning and collaboration are key to delivering top-tier fire safety solutions. Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to shadow another company as they conducted a Fire Risk Assessment at Castleford Tigers Rugby League’s home ground, Mend-A-Hose Stadium.

A Commitment to Growth & Support

Shadowing another fire safety team provided us with valuable insights and fresh perspectives on risk assessment practices in large sporting venues. The experience reinforced our dedication to learning, evolving, and working alongside others to improve fire safety across all industries.

More importantly, this day was about supporting Castleford Tigers in their mission to ensure the safety of their players, fans, and staff. As a club rooted in its community, keeping the stadium secure is paramount—not just for match days but for everyday operations.

Meeting UK Regulatory Requirements

Fire safety in sports grounds is governed by several key pieces of UK legislation, ensuring that venues like Mend-A-Hose Stadium meet strict safety standards:

  • Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 – This legislation requires sports grounds with a capacity of over 10,000 spectators (or 5,000 for football grounds) to obtain a safety certificate issued by the local authority.
  • Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sport Act 1987 – Introduced following the Bradford Fire Disaster, this act extends safety certification requirements to covered stands accommodating more than 500 spectators.
  • The Safety of Sports Grounds Regulations 1987 – These regulations outline the application process for safety certificates, ensuring compliance with fire safety and crowd management standards.

By shadowing the Fire Risk Assessment process, we gained deeper insights into how Castleford Tigers can align their fire safety measures with these regulations, ensuring full compliance and the highest level of protection for everyone at the stadium.

Observing the assessment process at a major sports venue reminded us of the unique fire safety challenges that come with large crowds, extensive facilities, and high-energy events. From exit route planning to fire-resistant materials, the assessment covered vital aspects that contribute to a secure stadium environment.

By embracing shared knowledge and teamwork, we strengthen our ability to tailor fire safety solutions to businesses of all sizes, from local offices to high-capacity venues like Mend-A-Hose Stadium.

At Green Arrow, we always strive to stay ahead in fire safety excellence. Whether through direct assessments, consultations, or collaborations like this one, we’re committed to creating safer environments for all.
